You can also follow this list as a guideline for typical vehicle maintenance:

Examine Frequently:

  • Dashboard lights are not burnt out
  • Taillights, headlights, and turn indicators turn on
  • Adequate tire tread and pressure in all four tires
  • The level of windshield washing fluid
  • Your vehicle's motor oil level

Check Every Three Months or Three Thousand Miles:

  • Transmission fluid level
  • Battery and cables
  • Engine belts are not damaged or cracking
  • Engine air filter
  • Motor oil
  • Exhaust pipes are not cracked or damaged
  • Power steering fluid

Every Six Months or Six Thousand Miles, Check:

  • Chassis lubrication
  • The engine air filter appears clean and is free from debris
  • Windshield washer fluid level
  • Windshield wiper blades are not worn or cracked

Check Every Twelve Months or Twelve Thousand Miles:

  • Transmission fluid
  • Battery and its cables
  • Brakes
  • The engine air filter appears clean and is free from debris
  • Adequate chassis lubrication
  • Level of engine coolant
  • Power steering fluid
  • Steering and suspension
  • Tire alignment
